Scrumptious Apple Torte with Caramel Sauce
I have been making this dessert since my children were very little. I got the recipe from a sweet lady named Marge, who we all loved dearly. Back in the day Marge ran a diner and she was a great cook. I loved getting recipes from her. This Apple Torte is so yummy and has been a great dessert to serve for special occasions. Enjoy! Apple Torte Beat together: 2 cups white sugar 1/2 cup butter 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. butter Sift together: 2 1/4 cups flour 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. cinnamon 2 tsp. soda 4 cups diced apple 1/2 cup nuts (optional) Mix with dry ingredients then sugar mixture. I was perusing the Prairie Pantry section of my blog and realized that I had not posted a recipe recently. Not long ago Farm Boy and I went to our neighbor’s for supper and I offered to bring dessert. In our part of the country a favorite dessert to bring is “bars”. Now some of you may not know what that is. Those of you readers from the Midwest are very well acquainted with the term “bars”. What ever you call them bars, pan cookies, brownies, this dessert is rich, chewy, and oh so satisfying! The original name of the recipe was called Chocolate Chip Bars. Not a good description in Farm Boys opinion. He dubbed them ” Goo Bars” and our family has called them that ever since. So here it is. Goo Bars! Chocolate Chip Goo...
Read MoreThe Last Ham Ball and a Recipe
When I married Farm Boy I was introduced to his family’s favorite holiday fare. Ham Balls. Or, Ham Loaves if you want to get technical about it. They are delicious. My own children and now their spouses as well, request these every Christmas. This past Christmas was no different. My mother-in-law volunteered to make them. That’s even better than me making them because she is the pro. After all, the recipe I use every year is hers. Even though the recipe makes 20 to 25 individual loaves I talked my MIL into making more than the recipe called for. I wasn’t sure who all would be showing up for Christmas dinner and I wanted to be sure we had enough. (Truth be told – I really wanted to make sure we had leftovers!) Leftover Ham Balls are...

Both of my daughters are wonderful cooks. The oldest, Brianna, is very good at keeping a one year’s supply of food in her home and rotating and cooking out of those stores. She is also great at preparing meals ahead of time and freezing them. If you are interested in what she does check out her blog at: www.thebishopswife.com She posts her recipes online for all to enjoy. The youngest daughter has a different style of cooking. All her life has been spent eating and cooking differently because of food allergies. Her life experiences have also influenced her cooking. She has lived in Japan, traveled to Thailand and Australia, worked in Korea and New York City. Living in Japan and NYC taught her to buy only the food she needed for a week because the places...
Read MoreI Used to be a Trekie, NCIS, and Perfect Pasta Sauce?
I used to be a Trekie. There I said it! My husband and I both were. I was also in love with Captain Picard from the Starship Enterprise. (Whatever you do don’t tell Farm Boy…) I loved Captain Picard’s voice. “Make it so.” That was what he always said when he told Number 1 to do his bidding. Now a days we are addicted to another show. NCIS. I don’t know if there is a word for that and as I sat here and contemplated it I couldn’t even come up with one. Never the less we love the show. The cast of characters are quirky and like a family. We get a kick out of them. I am however, slightly conflicted about the characters Kate and Ziva. I love both of them. Unfortunately Kate was killed in a season finale episode and then they...

I recently discovered that I have a penchant for collecting small specific cookbooks. I discovered this when re-organizing my kitchen and realized that I needed a new way to store all my cookbooks. One of my favorite cookbooks is titled “Muffins”. Sixty sweet and savory recipes…from old to new by Elizabeth Alston. I purchased this little gem several years ago and have used it over and over. I would say hands down that the muffin my family has requested, and the most requested recipe my friends have asked for, are the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins. Now I have granny kids and it has become one of their favorites too and although this recipe is listed under the “Tea Muffins” section they go great with a big glass of cold milk. As with...
